Athabasca County records 9th COVID case

Two active cases each now in Athabasca and Westlock counties

The ninth case of COVID-19 within the borders of Athabasca County was recorded Thursday.

ATHABASCA - Athabasca County's ninth overall case of COVID-19 was one of 130 new cases announced by the province Thursday.

During her twice weekly update Sept. 3, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw also reported there were no additional deaths related to the virus to report. That total remains at 242 since the first case of the new coronavirus was detected in Alberta almost exactly six months ago, in March. All of the other diagnosed cases in Athabasca County, Westlock County and the County of Barrhead have recovered, along with 12,653 others in Alberta.

There are currently two active cases in Athabasca County after one of the two detected in the Boyle area last week was confirmed to be recovered. There are also two active case remaining in Westlock County, of a total of six, while the County of Barrhead is currently clear of active cases, having had three recoveries overall.

Among neighbouring municipalities, the M.D of Opportunity currently has its first two cases; the M.D. of Lesser Slave River counts two active cases out of seven in total; Lac Ste. Anne County has one active case and eight recovered; and Sturgeon County currently reports four active cases and 39 recovered. Woodlands, Thorhild, Smoky Lake and Lac La Biche counties are currently clear.

Right now, there are 1,415 active cases around the province, bringing the total number of cases since March to 14,310 — the Calgary and Edmonton zones account for more than three-quarters of those.

Almost one million tests have now been performed on 785,664 individuals in Alberta.
