ATHABASCA - The post office in Athabasca has reopened following a day-long closure Dec. 17 that came about after an employee at the facility reported they had tested positive for COVID-19.

Nicole Lecompte, media relations for Canada Post, confirmed the closure in an email Dec. 18, saying the employee had been following physical distancing measures and wore personal protective equipment (PPE).

“We have followed the guidance of public health in informing employees, supporting contact tracing and conducting a sanitization of the affected areas of the post office,” Lecompte wrote.

She added Canada Post follows all bylaws and requirements in each community and have also implemented other practices including physical distancing, visible markings, staggered start times, increased cleaning, PPE and sanitizers.

“We regularly talk to employees and require they do a self-assessment before arriving for work,” said Lecompte. “The post office is open today (Dec. 18). We thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”

Lecompte added that due to all the added measures that have been implemented to ensure the safety of customers and personnel, and stop the spread of COVID-19, Canada Post is facing delays across Canada.

“We are doing our best to serve the community during COVID-19, but please understand we are not operating under normal circumstances and delays are a reality,” she said. “We ask that you keep the post office friendly, follow our mandatory face covering requirements in the post office and ensure you practice physical distancing.”
