COVID-19 cases in Barrhead stay static over Christmas holidays

Single case of COVID-19 variant identified in Alberta, but has apparently been contained
Barrhead COVID Update for Dec. 28
The geospatial map listing all active COVID-19 cases throughout Alberta now states there are four active cases in the County of Barrhead. It should be noted that testing slowed down over Christmas, so there may be more cases locally than what the map shows.

While there has been little change in the number of active cases of COVID-19 within the County of Barrhead, the total number of cases has gone up slightly.

According to the geospatial map that lists all COVID-19 cases within the province, the County of Barrhead currently has four active cases, 40 recoveries and two deaths.

On Dec. 22, there were a total of three active cases, 39 recoveries and two deaths. That means an additional active case and one recovery were added over the last five days.

In the Town of Whitecourt, there are currently 23 active cases of COVID-19 and 46 recoveries.

In Lac Ste. Anne County, there are 67 active cases. There have been 182 recoveries and eight deaths.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported today that there are a total of 15,487 active cases throughout the province.

While the number of active cases has declined by nearly 3,000 over the past five days, Hinshaw said it is important to note this is partially due to fewer Albertans presenting for testing on Christmas.

Hinshaw noted there are still 878 Albertans in hospital because of COVID-19, with 148 in ICU.

Another 112 Albertans have died over the past five days, bringing the provincial death toll to 1,002.

“Losing someone is never easy, but it is made even more difficult with the public health restrictions in place,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is dealing with loss or grief to reach out for support from family, friends or one of the many resources available at www.ahs.ca/helpintoughtimes.”

Hinshaw said Alberta Health Services has continued to administer vaccines over the holidays, only pausing on Christmas Day. As a result, more than 6,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were being administered in the province over the last two weeks.

She also confirmed that a single case of the more infectious variant of COVID-19 seen in other countries had also been identified in Alberta. This case was linked to a person who recently arrived from the United Kingdom (UK).

“The good news is that this individual did everything they were supposed to do, following quarantine and other public health measures. And at this point, there is no evidence that there has been further spread.”

Hinshaw said the next in-person update on COVID-19 will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Online case reporting will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29-30, followed by a break from Dec. 31 to Jan. 3.
