COVID cases jump by one in Athabasca County

Numbers in the county remain relatively low compared to some neighbours
ATH COVID 1029
There are now three active cases of COVID-19 within the borders of Athabasca County as of Oct. 29, according to the Government of Alberta's geospatial map.

ATHABASCA - A single, additional case of COVID-19 within the borders of Athabasca County was reported today, bringing the total of active cases to three and the number of total cases to 16.

The geospatial map, available on the Government of Alberta's website, does not indicate the exact location of the new case in the county, but does show it is not in the area surrounding Boyle, which has its own designated area under the geographical tab. Much of Athabasca County is included in its own geographical area that includes a southern portion of the M.D. of Opportunity and an eastern portion of of the M.D. of Lesser Slave River — in that geographical area, there are 12 active cases.

When observing the geospatial map, it is possible to toggle between a municipal and a geographical area.

The map also shows the number of active cases within Westlock County remains at 25, with 33 cases overall. Westlock town council implemented a mandatory mask bylaw at its Oct. 26 meeting. In the County of Barrhead, active cases dropped from eight to five overnight, with a total of 17 overall. Town of Barrhead council also passed its own mask bylaw earlier this week, but it has not come into force.

All previous cases within the borders of the three rural municipalities in the Town & Country region have recovered.

Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw did report Oct. 29, that 477 new cases had been confirmed across the province in the previous 24-hour period and there were five additional deaths as a result of the virus. There have now been 318 deaths since the pandemic was declared in March.

With today's update, the total number of active cases in Alberta sits at 4,921, while 21,803 have recovered. The province will also soon reach two million completed tests as that number sits at 1,776,206.

There are currently 130 people in hospital — 18 of them are in intensive care.

Nationally, there have now been more than 10,000 deaths.
