Forty active cases of COVID-19 identified in Westlock, Barrhead, Athabasca

According to Alberta Health, a total of 69 per cent of Albertans over the age of 12 have received two doses of vaccine, which works out to 58.7 per cent of the total population.

ATHABASCA-BARRHEAD-WESTLOCK - As COVID-19 numbers rise throughout Alberta, Athabasca, Barrhead and Westlock are also seeing a jump with 40 active cases in the communities served by Town & Country This Week

According to the geospatial map that lists COVID-19 cases in municipalities , Westlock County has 19 active cases, Athabasca County has 13 active cases and the County of Barrhead has eight cases as of 6 p.m. Aug. 25 — two days prior on Aug. 23, there were fewer than 30. 

Throughout Alberta, there are 8,496 active cases, with Alberta Health Services confirming 1,076 new cases of COVID-19 while conducting 11,747 tests over the course of 24 hours. 

A total of 284 Albertans are hospitalized due to COVID-19, an increase of 26 from the previous day. Fifty-nine of those patients are in the ICU. 

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported via Twitter yesterday that 80 per cent of the patients who are hospitalized are either unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated with one dose. Likewise, 98.3 per cent of the ICU patients are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. 

“Unvaccinated Albertans continue to make up the vast majority of hospitalizations,” she said. 

On that subject, the number of Barrhead County residents of all ages immunized with at least one dose sits at 52.1 per cent, while the immunization for people of all ages who have received at least dose one sits at 59.9 per cent in Athabasca County and 59.2 per cent in Westlock County. 

Provincially, 77.5 per cent of Albertans over the age of 12 (which equates to 65.9 per cent of the total population) have received at least one dose and 69 per cent of the 12-plus population (58.7 per cent of the total population) have gotten both shots.
