Boyle COVID Aug. 25
A single case of COVID-19 reported out of Boyle today was an employee of the local Co-op store and has been in isolation since it was confirmed. It's the third case of the virus reported in the Boyle area since the pandemic was declared and the seventh within the borders of Athabasca County.

BOYLE - The seventh case of COVID-19 within the borders of Athabasca County was confirmed in the Village of Boyle today as an employee of the local North Corridor Co-op, who is now self-isolating, but showing no symptoms, was reported.

A post on the North Corridor Co-op Facebook page the morning of Aug. 25 shared with followers that an employee of the Boyle Home Centre, who had last worked Aug. 11, received confirmation of the positive diagnosis and the company immediately reached out for guidance from Alberta Health Services. By late afternoon, following a briefing by Alberta's chief medical oficer of health Deena Hinshaw, the active case appeared on the Government of Alberta's interactive geospatial map.

"We reviewed our cleaning and sanitizing practices to ensure we're following or exceeding (AHS's) requirements for cleaning and sanitizing," the Facebook post read.

"North Corridor Co-op will remain diligent in following the health and safety measures that were put into place in response to the pandemic, including increased frequency of cleaning and sanitization, practicing safe physical distancing and encourage our employees to seek testing and to undergo self-isolation if they feel any potential COVID-19 symptoms.

"We understand the impacts of COVID-19, which is why we want to be transparent and disclose broad details about the confirmed cases like this one while ensuring the confidentiality of our employees."

The post went on to thank customers and community members for taking precautions to keep the community safe.

It's the third case of coronavirus in the immediate Boyle area (two previous cases were located just outside the village in Athabasca County) since the pandemic was declared in March, and the seventh reported within Athabasca County overall. The previous six have all recovered.

Dr. Hinshaw reported the province had seen an additional 77 active cases reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,134 — 608 of those are in the Edmonton zone and 306 in Calgary. The North zone, which includes Athabasca, Barrhead, Westlock and Boyle, have seen 825 cases in all — 260 of those are in MacKenzie County in the northwest corner of the province, where there have also been eight deaths.

Forty-six are currently in hospital, including seven in intensive care around the province. There have been 235 deaths as a result of the virus, with the average age of victims at 83, including one reported today.
