ATHABASCA – The Athabasca Regional Multiplex opened by appointment only July 6 with bookings taken by phone.
Bud Ottosen and Wyeth Tan waited outside patiently for their appointment in the fitness room at the Multiplex on opening day and Tam said she saw on social media how the equipment was set up in pods.
“I saw on Facebook how they have pods set up because then you don’t interfere with other people. It’s good for social distancing,” Tam said.
Ottosen agreed and hoped it makes fitness centre users more aware of others.
“Maybe it will make people aware of how to act in a gym,” he said.
Tam added that she hopes with the pods that users will be conscious of dropping weights.
“If you can pick it up, you can put it back down,” she said.
The cohort has been training together for a year and they are happy to resume their workouts at the Multiplex. Ottosen noted that there is equipment available in the Fieldhouse but the duo chose to use the pods and that they easily got the time they wanted when booking.
Clients can check availability in the pool at fitness pods on the Multiplex website before phoning to book and must wait to be let in just before their scheduled time.
The "majority" of the pool and front desk staff that were laid off as a result of the facility's closure in March due to the coronavirus pandemic have also returned, said manager Kelsea Brown.
You can check availability at the Multiplex website, choosing from the drop down menu under ‘Schedules’ for the aquatic centre or fitness pods. The default is for the current day but can be changed to week or month.
