Second Chance Animal Rescue Society - Athabasca

SCARS is a registered charity run almost entirely by volunteers. We rescue dogs and cats that are abandoned or slated for euthanasia. Many are sick or injured—all desperately need help. Each pet is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. We adopt over 1,200 pets each year and provide community spay-neuter-return and pet shelters.

SCARS helps communities by taking in pets that are unwanted or slated for euthanasia. We collect pets from remote area dog pounds and veterinary clinics that act as the pound. We also take in stray and abandoned pets, and many of them are sick or injured. We spay/neuter, vaccinate & microchip every animal that comes into our care. We find loving homes for more than 1,400 pets every year.

Adoptable Animals

Adopting a SCARS rescue involves a few steps:

  1. If you see a rescued animal on the website that you are interested in adopting, fill out the appropriate adoption form (there is one for dogs and one for cats).
  2. Once we receive the application, one of our volunteer screeners will contact you by phone or by email to review your application. The application allows us to help you find a pet that is the right match for your family. This is especially important for people who are new to pet guardianship.
  3. The screener will then forward your application to a foster home supervisor.  The supervisor will phone you to provide more info and answer your questions. She will approve the application if she believes the adoptable animal would be a good match or might give you some suggestions for other pets to consider.
  4. At this point, we can arrange a “meet & greet.” Because SCARS rescues are cared for in private foster homes, meeting times are dependent on matching your availability with that of the foster home.

Sanctuary Animals

Sanctuary animals are rescues that have very strong special needs and are likely to be with SCARS permanently as they will not assimilate with the public. Some have extreme medical conditions that require expensive treatments and others have very strong personalities that are not conducive to living with families.

In many shelters and societies, animals like this are often euthanized as they are too high maintenance and costly, and they don’t have any place to house them. SCARS is dedicated to giving these animals life and home. These animals are usually permanently with us, although in some cases we do eventually find a compatible match.

Website Advertising

The animal pages on our website are visited roughly 30,000 times each month. Most of the visits are to the adoptable animal pages. Due to the amount of traffic on these pages, we sell advertising to help fund more animal rescues.
