Edwin Parr's For Sale Theatre to present ghoulish tale

Edwin Parr Composite’s For Sale Theatre Group is ready to tell a spooky tale of mystery and paranormal activity with The Ghoul Friend.

Edwin Parr Composite’s For Sale Theatre Group is ready to tell a spooky tale of mystery and paranormal activity with The Ghoul Friend.

Set in the 1960’s, the play, written by Gene Donovan, is a tale of a son trying to save his mother’s hotel by creating a story so outrageous, so mysterious, and so deliriously spectacular it has to be true.

The story begins with Dan Merrick (played by Vincent Major), who tells the tale of a local fisherman who came through the doors of his mother’s hotel claiming to have seen a creature of monstrous proportions. The fisherman, who refuses to have his name made public (according to Dan) says he was out fishing on Lonesome Lake, which is nestled between Baptiste and Island Lake. The hotel soon fills up with people who want to try to get a glimpse of the huge creature with an abnormally large head and little pig eyes, noted EPC drama teacher Bruce MacDonald.

MacDonald says the fisherman’s tale is just the beginning of the scary fables that come to be told around the hotel. One of the maids has become fascinated with zombies and soon begins to weave in the story of a girl who drowned 17 years earlier in Lonesome Lake. Not long after, a mysterious girl makes her way to the hotel and Dan begins falling in love with her, despite the zombie rumors.

“Our main character Dan is caught in the web of mystery as he begins to fall in love with this girl who supposedly came from the lake,” MacDonald said.

“He is the realist in the whole story and doesn’t want to believe the zombie tales, even though he made up a story about the creature. The funny thing is that things begin to happen and as much as Dan tries to convince everyone that the girl isn’t a zombie and the things going on aren’t real, more and more the evidence is leaning towards the paranormal.”

MacDonald said the 22-character play is a mix between classic Scooby-Doo and stories like Inkheart where everything people say or read comes to life.

The key element that MacDonald wants everyone to know is that even though there are monsters and zombies, it’s more of a comedy mystery and a show that is geared towards the whole family and people of all ages.

MacDonald and EPC’s For Sale Theatre will present The Ghoul Friend Nov. 15-17 with one show a night starting at 7 p.m. at the Nancy Appleby Theatre. Tickets are $15 per person and can be bought in advance at Value Drug Mart or at the door on the night of the performance.
