A unique fundraiser in Smith this month will help send some local students to Costa Rica.
The ìShow Off Your Rackî antler show fundraiser will be held at the Smith Legion on Saturday, Jan. 19. Local hunters can bring in the seasonís best trophies for scoring, while entering contests for prizes.
Scoring will begin at 4 p.m.
Admission to the event is $5. Those who register antlers for $20 will be eligible to receive a $100 cash prize, while also being entered for one of four $100 gift certificates (two for Canadian Tire, two for Grizzly Ridge Honda). Two guns will also be among the prizes, and anyone can enter a raffle for a $1,000 taxidermy mount.
The show will have prizes for each species of antler. A licensed scorer will handle the judging.
Event organizers, like Smith School parent and teacher Jennifer McLeod, hope to raise a lot of money for the upcoming trip.
ìWe thought that because our community is involved in hunting, this might be a way to get people together to celebrate their accomplishments this season, visit, and get together,î said McLeod, noting such an event is a perfect opportunity to raise funds for the trip, which will be this spring break.
Once in Costa Rica, seven local students will enjoy an adventure-based trip with activities like white water rafting, horseback riding and visits to nature reserves.
