St. Philips Anglican Church is planning to break ground this week on a $60,000 expansion to modernize the church with some creature comforts.
The expansion includes some changes to the front entrance of the church and an addition on the right-hand-side where there’s open land.
The renovations will also include plumbing for the first time in 100 years of operation of the church, as well as a wheelchair accessible washroom, a sacristy area to clean-up vessels and a meeting room.
The ground-breaking ceremony is set for 7 p.m. on Sept. 25.
St. Philips Rev. Donna Willer anticipated the renovation and expansion could cost close to $100,000 after it’s completed, however there is no projected completion date.
She anticipated the renovation would be ongoing and planned to commence fundraising throughout the project’s progression.
“We can begin now as we have the money we need in trust with the Diocese of Edmonton through donations and sale of the rectory,” said Willer. “We will begin fundraising soon to assist with the extra costs that the church expansion incurs.”
Previously, the fundraising committee from the church first applied for the Community Facility Enhancement Grant in 2011 and finally received a seal of approval this year.
Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Maureen Kubinec provided the church with the $30,000 Community Enhancement Grant cheque at the end of January, but it’s only one part of the process.
