Have a “Come to Jesus Moment” with This Quirky Roadside Statue

HOT SUMMER GUIDE: Tucked away in the Canadian Badlands sits one of Drumheller’s quirkiest treasures, a 30-foot statue known affectionately as Jesus of the Dinosaurs.

If you think life-size biblical statues and prehistoric creatures make an odd pairing, you’re absolutely right—but that’s part of what makes this roadside relic so unforgettable. Standing solemnly atop a hill, often camouflaged by the surrounding rock, this decaying statue is a curious and atmospheric mix of history, humour, and a dash of the surreal.

The origins of Jesus of the Dinosaurs are as delightful as the statue itself. Back in the 1980s, artist Tig Seland created a Christian-themed Prehistoric Park that featured this imposing Jesus statue alongside 30 concrete dinosaurs, nicknamed “cementasauruses.” If the idea of Jesus shepherding a flock of dinosaurs makes you chuckle, you’re not alone.

Over time, the park fell into disrepair and eventually shut down, its creations scattered or left to the elements. Some of the dinosaurs found new homes within Drumheller’s town centre until they, too, succumbed to weathering. Fan favorites like “Batman Dino” had to be retired, but Jesus of the Dinosaurs has managed to endure, weathered yet steadfast in its hilltop vigil.

It’s hard not draw comparisons to Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue. While that iconic figure overlooks the extravagant cityscape of Rio de Janeiro, Jesus of the Dinosaurs gazes down at... well, not much more than empty space and a few scattered stones. Perhaps there was once a dino congregation to shepherd, but in the absence of concrete companions, it adds a whimsical air to ask questions like, “What would Jesus think of velociraptors? Would He ride a triceratops into Jerusalem?”

There’s something poetic about this dusty, weathered Jesus statue that has outlasted its fellow prehistoric companions. It’s a reminder that even the oddest and most unexpected places can carry significance, create memories, or simply bring a smile to your face. Beyond its quirk factor, the Jesus statue is a piece of Drumheller’s history, one that’s slowly fading. It embodies the spirit of a time when roadside attractions were built not with algorithms and focus groups in mind, but with pure imagination, heart, and an undeniable sense of fun. Plus, it’s a perfect photo op!

If you’re ready to add this to your itinerary, here’s the roadmap. The statue is located southwest of Drumheller’s downtown. Take Highway 575/South Dinosaur Trail, turn onto Premier Road, and make a right on Premier Crescent. Follow the road until it dead-ends, and if the weather’s clear, you’ll spot Jesus keeping watch from the hilltop. He blends in well, making Him a bit hard to find some days.

The trek offers a bit of adventure and a touch of mystery. When you finally spot Him, you might even feel some symbolic achievement for having “found Jesus.”
