A second person dies of COVID-19 in the Westlock area

WESTLOCK — A second person in the Westlock area has died of COVID-19.

On Thursday, the case was reported as recovered, but the numbers have shifted since to reflect the recent death. No details are available yet about the person's age, commorbidities or why the reporting error was made Thursday.

No new cases have been recorded since yesterday’s update. There are seven active cases in the area of 173 recorded since the start of the pandemic; 164 people have recovered. The first COVID-19 death in the Westlock area was linked to an outbreak at the Westlock Continuing Care, a 90-year-old man. 

The area includes the Town of Westlock, Westlock County and the Village of Clyde. 

In Alberta, 396 new cases were reported Friday out of about 10,000 tests for a positivity rate of four per cent. There are 6,588 active cases in the province. 

There are 475 people in hospital, including 89 in ICU. Nine people have died since yesterday which brings the death toll in the province to 1,693. 

The province has administered 114,066 doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines as of yesterday. Of those, 23,268 people have received both doses.  

Alberta’s chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw will give her next update Monday, Feb. 8.
