ATHABASCA - A case of COVID-19 was confirmed at Edwin Parr Composite School in Athabasca today.

A news release from Aspen View Public Schools states that a positive case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual from Edwin Parr Composite (EPC) School.

"In the abundance of caution, EPC students and staff who had close contact with the individual have been directed to stay home and await further direction from Alberta Health Services (AHS)," the release states. "Anyone considered a close contact of a case of COVID-19 is contacted directly by AHS."

Aspen View Superintendent Neil O’Shea adds, “Alberta Health Services is working closely with Aspen View and EPC administration to ensure the necessary steps are taken to protect the health and safety of students and staff.”

Whether that individual is a student or a member of the staff is unknown at this point and the school division says no further case details will be provided to protect the privacy of the individual.

"EPC continues to operate with current protocols in place for all other students and staff," the release went on to say.

Parents were also notified with a recorded voice message from the principal, Desmond Nolan.

More information on this story will be reported as it becomes available.

Aspen View reminds parents and guardians of students, as well as staff, to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, and to complete the daily checklist prior to students attending school. If symptoms are discovered, students are advised to stay home and complete the self-assessment provided by Alberta Health Services, or call Health Link at 811.
