WESTLOCK – As of 10 a.m. May 5, Westlock County Fire Services remains on standby to provide mutual-aid assistance for a wildland fire in the area of Range Road 252 and Township Road 640 near Bolloque Lake in the northwest portion of the municipality.

According to the update, the fire is ongoing but is not creating any visible smoke — Alberta Wildfire ground crews remain on scene and residents are advised to “remain alert and be prepared to evacuate if required.” Anyone not required to be in the area are asked to stay out as emergency services continue to work.

Specifically, the fire is north of Long Island Lake and Teen Time, which is south of Bolloque Lake.

At 10:25 p.m., May 4, Athabasca and Westlock County Fire Services were clearing the scene for the night along with Alberta Wildfire Air Support.

Water bombers and helicopters had been called in earlier in the evening and fire retardant had been dropped on both flanks of the blaze, while a fire wall had been established. At that time, the head of the fire was in the Bolloque Lake area and ground crews and dozers worked throughout the night to contain it. Previously displaced residents had been approved to return home, but remain on evacuation notice.
