The Westlock & District Chamber of Commerce's inaugural business and community awards gala goes April 18.

WESTLOCK - It has been a very good year for the Westlock and District Chamber of Commerce.

Just 11 months after the re-formation of the local business advocacy group, 65 members from the town and county have already signed up, and there are more coming forward every day.

Now, the organization is reaching out to the community for its input on which local businesses and individuals deserve to be awarded at the chamber’s business and community awards gala April 18 at the Westlock and District Community Hall.

Nominations are officially open and residents can now log on to the chamber website at http://www.westlockchamber.com/awards-gala/ to provide their opinions.

“Nominations are open until March 15,” said chamber secretary Brandi Wolff. “We’ve had some trickling in. I expect the majority will come in that last week.”

There are nine categories where awards will be given out ranging from the Business of the Year Award to awards for exceptional customer service (individual and business), innovation and social media presence.

The Social Media Award will go to the business that demonstrates excellent use of a social media platform for the use of a business. The Community Ambassador Award will be presented to an employee or volunteer that has demonstrated leadership in organizing an event or completing a significant project in the past year that enhances our business community.

The Renovation/Restoration Award will be won by a local business that has physically renovated or restored the appearance of the premises where business is conducted in the last 12 months, in order to enhance or promote their business.

The Innovation Award will be given out to a business that has demonstrated an innovative approach to business growth, retention or comeback, while the Pioneer Award will go to an individual business person who has had a positive impact on the business community for more than 20 years.

The New Business Award, as you might expect, will be awarded to a new business operating less than three years that enhances the image of the Westlock business community and exemplifies the type of business practices that customers find most desirable.

A Customer Service Award will be given to an individual and to a business that demonstrates exceptional customer service skills by consistently offering a high quality of service and by going beyond the call of duty to assist customers.

There will also be three Business of the Year Awards to hand out as well – one for smaller businesses with less than 10 employees; one for businesses with11-29 employees; and one for larger businesses with more than 30 employees.

Tickets, sponsorships and volunteer opportunities are available on the chamber website.
