With winter right around the corner, RCMP are reminding cabin owners to ensure their properly, like boats and other watercraft, is safely secured. In 2019 there were over 650 reported break and enters to seasonal properties across Alberta.
WESTLOCK - RCMP are urging cabin owners across Alberta to take preventative measures to ensure they aren’t easy targets for thieves.

In 2019 the RCMP report that were over 650 reported break and enters to seasonal properties across the province — the highest months for reported break and enters were November, October and December.

Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Al Baird said they always get a few reports of cabin break-ins — specifically in the Long Island Lake area which is home to the Summer Village of Larkspur.

“We don’t have break-ins on a daily basis in our area, but they do happen for sure. We don’t want people just to lock their doors and forget about it until springtime. We need to be diligent and everyone needs to play a part. Cabin owners need to do what they can to safeguard their property and have people check on it,” said Baird.

Some of the tips provided by the RCMP include removing all valuables, including quads or boats, or locking them in a shed or garage.

Double check that all doors and windows are locked, and if you have full-time neighbours, ask them to periodically check on your property. Alarms and surveillance cameras, as well as exterior and interior lights on timers, are also recommended by police.

“And there’s other things that can be done, like having your driveway plowed to make it appear you’re home,” Baird added.

Alberta RCMP will be using the hastag #SeasonalSafety for the duration of October. For more crime prevention and safety tips, follow @RCMPAlberta (Twitter) and @RCMPinAlberta (Facebook).
