WESTLOCK - Shelved for the entirety of 2020 due to COVID-19, the Westlock Grey Lions are making the most of their comeback season and have their sights set on a Top 4 regular season finish and lengthy playoff run in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association.
Following their 7-2 home win July 23 over the Edmonton Grey Jays, the club, which is composed of players ages 30-plus, sits with a 7-3 mark and firmly in second overall in the nine-team AWCBA. Player/manager Sheldon McConaghy said although the wins are nice, it’s just been fun to be able to get back on the field.
“It’s been awesome. It’s been good to see the guys and just get back out on the diamond again. It’s just a lot of fun to be able to play the game of baseball again,” said McConaghy.
The club has three more regular season games remaining before the playoffs, which sees the league cut in half as the top four and bottom four team play-off. Sandwiched in between July 27 and Aug. 10 road tilts is the club’s final regular season home game at Keller Field, which is slated for Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. when they’ll face the Sherwood Park Pirates.
“We should end up in the top half of the league again for sure,” McConaghy added.
