WESTLOCK – The Westlock Grey Lions continued their late-season push towards an Alberta West Central Baseball Association regular season crown with a 15-1 thrashing of the Edmonton Grey Jays last week.

Played at Tiger Goldstick Park in Edmonton July 27, the Grey Lions showed no mercy while rolling to the five-inning win that improved their record to 8-3 in the AWCBA.

Player/manager Sheldon McConaghy said their hot bats led to the easy victory, which was their second over the Grey Jays in less than a week.

“We have a hot-hitting line-up right now and they have a little shaky defence so that led to a few extra runs for sure,” said McConaghy.

Now the Grey Lions will focus on their remaining tilts, which includes an Aug. 5 home contest at Keller Field versus the Sherwood Park Pirates. Following they’ll hit the road Aug. 10 for their final regular game versus the Sherwood Park Ducks, then turn their attention to the league playoffs, which sees the Top 4 clubs square off.

“I was looking at the standings and there are two or three teams going for first place with eight wins each. It’s a tight race at the top,” McConaghy continued.

“It’s us, the Sturgeon Paladins and then the St. Albert Cardinals. We’re all battling for the top and hopefully it works out for us.”
