Haven, Cokee and Hudson Schmidt perform “What a Wonderful World” at the 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon hosted at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Barrhead . An in-person event like this was impossible to hold over the past two years due to the pandemic, but now the Volunteer Appreciation Event is making a comeback on Saturday, April 30.

BARRHEAD – With restrictions lifting and the threat of COVID-19 diminished, the Barrhead and District Volunteer Appreciation Event will be returning as an in-person awards ceremony on Saturday, April 30.

Three local volunteers (whose names will be publicized later in the Barrhead Leader) at the event, which will be held at the Bethel Pentecostal Church at 2 p.m.

Elaine Dickie, who is among the organizers of the event, said the celebration will feature some live entertainment and door prizes, on top of the awards.

Dickie said the three winners were basically chosen by reaching out to local organizations and asking them to put together some nominations.

After being forced to cancel the event in 2020 and restricting the awards to an online celebration in 2021, Dickie said this year’s event is all about ramping up enthusiasm for volunteering once again.

“This is an opportunity to come back, remember who it was you used to volunteer with and think about joining again,” she said.

Tickets cost $5 and will be available through the Barrhead Public Library, the Town of Barrhead and County of Barrhead offices, and the Barrhead Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) office.

Dickie noted that before you head down to FCSS, you should call ahead so they can have the tickets ready. Their phone number is (780) 674-3341.

In the past, the volunteer appreciation event has usually drawn out a few hundred people, though the year when former Lieutenant-Governor Lois Hole was recognized, as many as 600 turn out. (Past venues include the Bethel church, the Barrhead Elementary School gym and the Barrhead Agrena.)

Dickie noted that because we’re all easing back into the swing of in-person events, attendance will be limited to 200 people, so you should get your tickets when they become available on Monday, April 18.
