WESTLOCK – A 30-year-old man faces a dangerous driving charge, plus a handful of tickets, following a near head-on collision last Sunday morning on Highway 44 north between Dapp and Jarvie.
At 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1, Westlock RCMP were called to Range Road 270 and Highway 44 where a southbound Pontiac Grand Prix being driven by a 30-year-old man crossed the centre line and sideswiped a northbound Buick LeSabre being driven by an elderly woman — neither driver was injured in the crash and both were treated on scene.
Westlock RCMP Cpl. Dennis Properzi said the driver of the Grand Prix, who told them he had fallen asleep at the wheel, now faces a Criminal Code charge of dangerous driving, as well as a pair of tickets — driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
“Both parties were shook up pretty good,” said Properzi Aug. 3. “The man was released on scene and given a date for Westlock Provincial Court.”
Beyond that incident and the high traffic volumes on the Friday and Monday, the long weekend was relatively quiet, Properzi noted.
“It wasn’t too bad, just a few calls around the area, but nothing out of the ordinary. I think we had a couple of complaints from the Clyde pits and did some patrols out there, but nothing major,” he said. “Other than a high-volume of traffic on the travel days, knock on wood, we didn’t have any other MVC aside from the one on Sunday.”
