WESTLOCK - There were no injuries following an accidental cooking fire in one of the Smithfield Lodge suites May 9, which was contained by a fast-acting staffer of the facility.
Town of Westlock firefighters got the call around 2:50 p.m. Sunday that a blaze had broken out in a stove in one of the suites of the seniors housing facility. And while the fire was quickly contained, there was additional damage from smoke and water from the sprinkler system.
“Smithfield Lodge staff did a fantastic job of evacuating the residents with the assistance of RCMP, Westlock County Peace Officer Darcy DeVos and EMS. And thanks to a lodge staff member for using a portable extinguisher to knock down the fire in the initial stages,” said town fire chief Stuart Koflick, noting they did request assistance from Westlock County, but cancelled them en route.
