Police continue to investigate the causes of the June 1, 2020 Jarvie General Store fire.

WESTLOCK — Police in Westlock are looking for public assistance with their investigation into the causes of the fire that destroyed the Jarvie General Store last summer.

“The cause of the fire is considered to be suspicious,” RCMP wrote in a press release. Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Al Baird and the Westlock County manager of emergency services John Biro both confirmed in July 2020 that the police had taken over the investigation.

“We investigate like it would be an arson until we can determine otherwise,” Baird said at the time.

RCMP asks that anyone with information, or those who might have seen anything around the time of the fire to contact the Westlock Detachment at 780-349-4491.

Crime Stoppers is also an option for people who want to remain anonymous—they can be reached at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.tipsubmit.com, or via text message.

On June 1, 2020 Westlock County firefighters responded to the early morning blaze in the small hamlet. The call came in just before 4 a.m. and 26 firefighters were on scene for nine hours, trying to keep the flames away from a nearby gas tank.

The fire started on the bottom floor, which was already burning when the fire departments arrived. No injuries were reported.
