Premier Danielle Smith, along with the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Rebecca Schulz, and the Minister of Affordability and Utilities, Nathan Neudorf, will be holding a press conference tomorrow to make further comments on the federal government's proposed clean electricity regulations.

Smith has already said that “under no scenario will the Government of Alberta permit the implementation of the proposed federal electricity regulations,” which the federal government released in draft form last month with the goal of achieving a net-zero power grid by 2035.

The proposed regulations include a “greenhouse gas emissions standard” that would apply to all entities generating electricity using fossil fuels with a capacity of 25 megawatts or greater.

In a release last month, Smith said the regulations would make electricity unaffordable and unreliable. As well, speaking to the Canadian Energy Executive Association at their conference in Banff last month, Smith said the proposed regulations would put Alberta at risk of experiencing blackouts and brownouts.

The federal government's information page about the regulations states that exemptions would be granted for the use of fossil fuels to produce electricity in the face of emergencies, and, except for coal, the use of unabated fossil fuels on a limited basis to meet peak power demands.

Smith's press conference is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and will be livestreamed on the Premier's social media accounts, as well as the Government of Alberta website.
