A Sangudo man faces charges of second-degree murder in connection with a death that happened in the hamlet.
On Thursday, Dec. 17, Mayerthorpe RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance and an assault in progress at a residence located near 49th Street and 51st Avenue.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) also attended the scene and gave first-aid to 65-year-old James Kenneth Gantz. a resident at the home. Gantz, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on the scene.
RCMP took a 34-year-old man into custody and a day later, charged Clayton Jackie Desjarlais with second-degree murder as well as failure to comply with release conditions.
Desjarlais was remanded into custody following an interim release hearing. He is scheduled to appear in Mayerthorpe Provincial Court on Jan. 14.
An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week in Edmonton.
An RCMP media release stated that due to the circumstances of the incident that Alberta RCMP Major Crimes will be taking over the investigation and as the case is now before the courts, they will be releasing no further information.
