ATHABASCA – By the end of the summer of 2021 there were already more catalytic converter thefts in the City of Edmonton than in all of 2020 and that trend is now being seen throughout the province, including recently in the Athabasca area.
Athabasca RCMP are warning the public to be alert and take precautions after responding to seven thefts of the automotive devices from local businesses since the end of October, all within the Town of Athabasca, says Const. Jay Tessier.
Catalytic converters are attached to a vehicle’s exhaust system and use precious metals like rhodium, palladium and platinum to filter toxic emissions. According to the Alberta Motor Association (AMA), the cost to replace a catalytic converter could run up to $1,800 with parts and labour, plus any costs for additional damage to the vehicle. Thieves may be able to sell one on the black market for up to $200.
As RCMP continue to investigate the thefts locally and across the province they recommend several crime prevention strategies that can be used by residents to protect their vehicle including parking in well-lit areas and close to building entrances with video surveillance, or ideally inside a garage with closed and locked doors; setting your car alarm to go off when it detects vibration; and engraving your vehicle identification number (VIN) on your catalytic converter.
Skilled thieves can unbolt or saw the part out from under your car in less than three minutes, or even sooner if there is no need to jack up the side of the vehicle. RCMP advise residents to report to police if you see anyone underneath a vehicle or near residences or businesses at odd hours of the day or night.
The catalytic converter may also be welded to the vehicle to make it more difficult to steal. Protective clamps and cages can also be purchased. The AMA advises vehicle owners to use a reputable repair shop or dealer, so as not to support the black market trade of vehicle parts.
