Barrhead Red Knights president Don Smith leads a group of motorcyclists out from the Pembina West Co-op gas bar to start the 2020 toy run. The not-for-profit club recently asked Town of Barrhead council to temporarily close a section of Veteran's Way for their 2021 charity ride.

BARRHEAD- The Red Knights are hoping to feed a lot of people during their annual charity motorcycle ride fundraiser.

And thanks to a decision by Town of Barrhead council they will have more room to cook and display their motorcycles.

The proceeds of the ride will go to the Barrhead Community Victim Services Unit (VSU).

During their Aug. 10 meeting, councillors unanimously approved a request by the club to close a portion of 51st Avenue (Veteran's Way) between Main Street and 51st Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 11.

The Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club is, as the name suggests, a motorcycle club for firefighters past and present.

The Barrhead chapter was formed close to three years ago by former fire chief John Whittaker, a long-time motorcycle rider.

Red Knights president and Town of Barrhead Coun. Don Smith requested to close the street to host a barbecue and activities as part of the fundraiser.

Since the club's formation, it has hosted an annual summer charity toy ride supporting Barrhead and District Family Support Services' Santa's Toy Box program.

However, he said the Knights have decided to "spread the wealth" throughout the community by supporting a different local charity every year.

"We couldn't think of a better one to start with than the VSU," Smith said.

Mayor Dave McKenzie said he wholeheartedly supported the club's request.

"I love the strategy and love the cause," he said.

The VSU is a non-profit organization that helps support individuals who are the victims of crime, trauma, death or other emergencies in Barrhead, Swan Hills, Fort Assiniboine and Big Lakes County. Most often the VSU volunteers, or volunteer advocates, are called upon at the request of the RCMP, but also receive referrals from fire services, the Crown Prosecutor’s office, healthcare centres, and ambulance crews.

Over the last two years, the Barrhead VSU went before Barrhead's municipal councils over concerns about changes to their delivery service and funding models.
