ATHABASCA – Two men were arrested and are facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking after Athabasca RCMP executed a search warrant at a rural property on Highway 827 Thursday morning.

Athabasca RCMP members teamed up with local Integrated Traffic Unit, the Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit and the Police Dog Service to search the property Feb. 4 after receiving information regarding drug trafficking at the location in January.

Police found what is suspected to be half of a kilogram of methamphetamine, 11 grams of heroin, liquid GHB (also known as the date rape drug) and more than $3,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime. They also seized two replica handguns and drug trafficking paraphernalia in the operation.

Athabasca RCMP Staff Sgt. Paul Gilligan said Friday the suspected drugs will be sent to the RCMP lab for positive identification, which can take anywhere from a couple weeks, up to a month.

An RCMP media release, received Feb. 5 reported Lucas Marler, 35, and Jason Oltmanns, 39, both of Athabasca, have been charged with four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

“Marler was released from custody with conditions and Oltmanns was remanded into custody. They are both scheduled to appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on Feb. 8, 2021.”
