Traffic on Highway 55 on the east hill in Athabasca was down to one lane Aug. 1 for more than an hour as emergency crews responded to a single vehicle rollover in the westbound ditch just after 12:30. ATHABASCA — A single-vehicle accident caused delays for about an hour on Highway 55 in the area known as the east hill in the town of Athabasca.

At 12:40 p.m. Aug. 1, Athabasca RCMP received a call about a vehicle roll over in the north ditch and attended the scene where three people were found to be in the vehicle, a 1985 Ford F-250, said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff with RCMP media relations early Monday morning.

“Early reports (are) that the vehicle was traveling east up the hill when it entered the south ditch, overcorrected and went across the highway and rolled,” he said.

Two passengers in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and the driver, a 70-year-old man, was taken to hospital by police to be treated for his injuries and check his blood alcohol content.

“RCMP are conducting an investigation on whether or not alcohol was related with the collision,” said Savinkoff.
