A Barrhead area resident who helped found an Edmonton chapter of an international Star Trek fan organization recently donated a total of $828 worth of Lego products to Barrhead Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) for their Santa’s Toy Box program.
Kyle Hughes, who works at the Barrhead Public Library, is a member of the new Edmonton chapter of STARFLEET International, which has existed since the early 1970s.
Hughes said STARFLEET International (SFI) has hundreds of chapters around the world, and Edmonton is part of Region 10 of SFI, which covers Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan and Alaska.
“We’re the newest ship for Region 10. We’re called the USS Cerberus,” he said, noting that members of STARFLEET International can be part of any chapter around the world.
Hughes said the local chapter was actually started by Jeromy Estell out of Edmonton, though he helped get it going. The ship name “Cerberus,” incidentally, was voted on and chosen by the first 10 members of the chapter and is a reference to the mythological three-headed hound that guards the gates of Hades.
Earlier this year, Hughes said he conducted a toy drive with other members of the USS Cerberus and they collected more than $700.
Thanks to a discount from Home Hardware, however, they were able to purchase more than $800 in Lego toys (of which Hughes is also a big fan) and donate the whole effort to FCSS.
