Sticky business

Barrhead RCMP asks for public’s help in finding the culprit who put glue inside ATM card reader

BARRHEAD-The Barrhead RCMP is asking for the public's help to solve what is a sticky situation.

On Jan. 23, a male estimated to be between five foot seven inches and five foot 10 inches tall went into Barrhead's Servus Credit Union at about 11:30 p.m.

"It is a very bizarre file. He entered the Credit Union and started putting the glue from the stick into the card reader of the ATM," said Const. Ben Tapp, adding the bank's security cameras captured the entire incident.

He added the suspect, who was holding the glue stick with a bare hand, smeared the glue on his other hand (which was gloved) and then use the glove as a mechanism to insert the glue.

"We don't know why he did it. No one at the detachment has ever heard of such a thing," Tapp said.

Unfortunately, the security footage is not clear enough to identify the suspect. Making things more difficult is that he was wearing a mask. However, Tapp noted the suspect is wearing unique clothing that someone might be able to recognize.

Probably the most identifiable and unique article of clothing is his sweater or hoodie with an image of what could be a yellow or gold tiger, lion or dragon on the back.

"Whatever it is, it is very distinctive, so we are hoping someone might recognize it," he said.

If you have information about the suspect's identity or any other information about the incident, contact the Barrhead RCMP at 780-674-4848 during detachment hours 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m. or after hours at 780-674-2696. For those wishing to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
