Two women and one man are dead after an SUV that was reported to be driving erratically on Highway 813 north of Athabasca collided with a semi-truck on Highway 2 southeast of Westlock Monday night.

WESTLOCK - Three people are dead following a collision between a semi-truck and an SUV southeast of Westlock in Sturgeon County.

Morinville RCMP responded to a call regarding the collision on Highway 2, just north of the Highway 651 turnoff at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 9. Two women and one man in the SUV died, while the driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

"The identities of the deceased have yet to be determined. The investigation continues," stated an Aug. 10 media release from RCMP.

The highway was closed, with traffic re-routed throughout the night and into the morning to allow RCMP and a collision analyst to investigate the scene. It reopened early in the afternoon Aug. 10.

Athabasca RCMP received complaints about the SUV driving erratically on Highway 813, north of the town about two hours before the crash occurred.

"The initial investigation has determined that the SUV involved in this collision was the subject of driving complaints yesterday evening," the media release went on to say. "Starting after 9:30 p.m., witnesses reported a white SUV driving erratically in the Athabasca area. Officers in surrounding detachments, including Westlock and Morinville, were notified. As officers were trying to locate the SUV, the collision occurred. The SUV appeared to be southbound on Highway 2, when it swerved into the oncoming lane and collided with the northbound semi."
