ATHABASCA – Property owners in the Town of Athabasca can expect their tax notices in the mail in May, after council approved the tax rates for 2021 at its last meeting.

Councillors voted unanimously to pass the annual Tax Rate Bylaw at their April 6 meeting, setting the mill rate at 8.51368 for residential, and 17.01521 for non-residential and for machinery and equipment, all of which remain unchanged from 2020, in an effort to collect $5,009,693 in taxes this year.

The Alberta School Foundation Fund Requisition sits at $1,046,190, with tax rate of 2.60564 for residential and 3.79956 for non-residential. The Lodge requisition for seniors housing is at $47,057 with rates of 0.1316 for all assessed properties.

The estimated municipal expenditures and transfers set out in the budget for 2021 total $11,297,131; and the estimated municipal revenues and transfers from all sources other than taxation is estimated at $6,287,438, which leaves a balance of $5,009,693 to be raised by general municipal taxation, reads the bylaw.

The assessed value of all property in Athabasca this year is at $360,304,670, which is up slightly from last year’s tally of $356,349,920. Residential properties account for $260,500,080 of that assessment.

With a mill rate (or tax rate) of 8.51 for a residential property assessed at $100,000, for instance, a homeowner would pay $851. For a home worth $1 million, the tax would be $8510.
