Two shot at Jean Baptiste Gambler reserve

RCMP still seeking suspects, as victims have not cooperated

ATHABASCA – RCMP are still investigating and looking for suspects after two shooting incidents at the Jean Baptiste Gambler First Nations Reserve, north of Calling Lake, in the first week of January.

Athabasca RCMP Staff Sgt. Paul Gilligan said in an interview last week that members responded to reports of separate shootings Jan. 2 and Jan. 7, both of which resulted in injuries to those who were targeted. Potential suspects have not yet been located, he said, and both victims have yet to provide any information.

“At this time, neither of the victims have cooperated with police to date, so we’re having some difficulties and challenges in our investigation from that perspective,” said Gilligan.

On Jan. 2, three suspects entered a home and discharged a firearm at an individual, who was taken to hospital in stable condition and later released with only superficial wounds.

In a second incident on Jan. 7, an individual in a vehicle parked in a driveway was shot, and suspects fled on foot and are yet to be identified, said Gilligan. Police Dog Services were utilized at the time, but were unable to find the culprits.

Athabasca RCMP continue their investigation with the assistance of the RCMP’s Forensic and Identification Services, along with the General Investigation Section, which specializes in major crimes.

If you have any information about these incidents, you are encouraged to contact the Athabasca RCMP at 780-675-5122. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
