Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for Athabasca County, the County of Barrhead and Westlock County, as well as parts of neighbouring municipalities.

The advisory states that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds, which are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

Normally, this type of weak rotation is not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

These type of funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning. However, if you do spot a funnel cloud developing nearby, prepare to take shelter.

The alert is in effect for parts of Athabasca County near Athabasca, Boyle, Caslan, Rochester, Atmore, Rochester, Colinton and Meannok; parts of Barrhead County near Barrhead, Lac La Nonne, Neerlandia, Bloomsbury, Vega, Thunder Lake and Holmes Crossing; and parts of Westlock County near Westlock, Clyde, Larkspur, Fawcett and Jarvie.

The advisory also advises caution for residents of Woodlands County near Fort Assiniboine, Timeu, Topland and Goose Lake; the MD of Lesser Slave River near Chisholm and Cross Lake; Thorhild County near Newbrook and Long Lake Provincial Park; and the the MD of Big Lakes near Swan Hills.
