WESTLOCK – Four people were transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 44 and 651 shortly after 4:45 p.m., Sept. 1.
In a heavy downpour, emergency crews including Westlock RCMP, Westlock County fire fighters, and EMS worked to clear the scene after the two vehicles collided, blocking traffic on both highways. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage — crews worked to clear the scene, the well-used highway was backed up with over 1.5 kilometres of vehicles, delaying traffic.
Westlock RCMP Cpl. Dennis Properzi says the incident is currently under investigation as a highway collision reconstructionist was on scene determining the cause and fault of the accident. Charges may be laid following the investigation.
Second crash
A 75-year-old woman was sent to hospital with minor injuries following a Thursday-afternoon crash on a rural road in Westlock County.
On Sept. 2 at 1:50 p.m., Westlock RCMP, Westlock County firefighters and EMS responded to a crash between a pickup truck and SUV on Township Road 592 and Range Road 252 — roughly half way between the Village of Clyde and Hamlet of Vimy.
RCMP report the truck, driven by a 56-year-old man, was travelling north on RR 252 and collided with an SUV, operated by a 75-year-old woman, heading east on TWP 592 — firefighters had to cut open the SUV to remove the woman.
Although the initial evidence is that the SUV, which was written off in the crash, failed to obey the yield sign, Westlock RCMP Cpl. Leigh Drinkwater said their investigation continues and charges are pending. The driver of the truck was not injured.
“The woman was transported to hospital for further examination and observation,” said Drinkwater the day following the collision.
