Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Al Baird said people now phoning into the administration line will be greeted with a voice prompt.

WESTLOCK – Westlock’s top cop is preaching patience for callers as the detachment has rolled out a new phone system.

Callers dialing the Westlock RCMP administration line (780-349-4492) for things like a criminal records check, or following up on an accident report will now be greeted by an auto attendant instead of a person. From there, callers can then choose between different options to access traffic services, or if they have a general inquiry, while the Victim Services Unit, which is also housed at the detachment, can be reached directly at 780-349-3443 — If the line chosen doesn’t have someone available, a voicemail can be left. As always in case of an emergency, call 911, while the complaint line is 780-349-4491.

Staff Sgt. Al Baird said they’re currently down one front-office staffer and are trying to manage the intake of calls as best they can. The new system came on line two weeks ago.

“People are calling and thinking they’re getting voicemail right away, but it’s just our new system to help the ladies at the front out. We didn’t want to make it complicated and we’re just trying to streamline things a bit,” said Baird.

“I just want people to be aware of the change — some have told me they can’t through and they’re getting voicemail and it’s just a voice prompt.”
