WESTLOCK - Are you between the ages of eight to 17 and own your own skateboard, BMX or scooter?
If so, you might be interested in a competition being hosted at the Westlock Action Sports Park on Monday, Aug. 17, between 12 and 4 p.m.
This competition is being organized by the summer program offered jointly by the Westlock and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Town of Westlock.
Makayla Chamzuk, one of the summer program coordinators, said they received spe- cial permission from Alberta Health Services (AHS) to put on the competition.
The summer program has teamed up with the Edmonton House of Wheels, an indoor multi-sport riding facility and retail store.
Chamzuk said the House of Wheels will provide judges for this competition and will have a team put on a demonstration at the halfway point.
Initially, the competition was only open to youth between the ages of 13 to 17, but Chamzuk said they have since added a Newcomer category for children ages eight to 12. There are also beginner, intermediate and advanced categories for the various skill levels.
There was initially an entry fee, but thanks to lining up some sponsors, the competition is now free. All you need to enter is to call FCSS at 780- 349-5900 or to pre-register online at www.westlock.ca.
Participants also need to bring their own skateboard, BMX or scooter, and they must wear a helmet. (Other protective gear is encouraged.)
There will also be a DJ on site, along with free giveaways and prizes. Chamzuk noted they hope for around 20 competitors in total to sign up.
When asked why the summer program is putting on this competition, Chamzuk said they notice kids using the Westlock skate park all the time.
“It’s just to help promote the skate park,” she said, adding that it’s a great place for youth to go with during the pandemic.
Chamzuk noted they may do some temperature testing of competitors and will be encouraging everyone to social distance. That said, even spectators are welcome provided they follow the AHS guidelines around social distancing.
