Local bobsleigh athlete, Melissa Lotholz, talks to the Barrhead Leader after winning a bronze medal as part of Kaillie Humphries two-person bobsleigh team in an event in Altenburg, Germany.
Whitecourt hosted the World Snowmobile Invasion, and event lasting five days, with events such as the Freestyle Event, Frozen Memories, and the World’s Longest Snowmobile Parade, a record broken on Feb. 13 with over 1,000 snowmobiles taking part.
The Northern Lights Snowmobile Club is dedicated to more than just sledding, they are dedicated to the trail they ride.
After taking an afternoon trip Clair Wilson and Curtis Kager decided they had had enough ducking and dodging, and promised to make the necessary changes to the snowmobile trail in order to make it a safe place for them and their families.
With hard work, dedication, and a couple of grants, the trail was officially completed and was deemed safe for families with children of all ages.
The season may be over, but for one Barrhead based athlete, the work is just about to begin.
On March 3, Melissa Lotholz made her way back home after spending the better part of four months with the Canadian National Bobsleigh Team as part of two-time Olympic gold medalist Kaillie Humphries’ two-person sled.
Every mask has a story to tell, and the one worn by Ty Steinbring is no exception. It tells the story of love; a father’s love, and a love for the game.
Steinbring chose to dedicate his helmet to his late father, and chose his father’s motto; be the best person you can be, in hockey and in life, as well as two ribbons, and a portrait of his father, Trevor.
“It is something I will keep forever and cherish,” Steinbring said. “It brings back all of him and me, and hockey.”
Honoured. That’s the word Allan Measures used over and over again to describe his feelings about being named one of Finland’s SM-Liiga top 10 all-time foreign hockey players.
The SM-Liiga is an European Elite professional league and is Finland’s equivalent of the NHL.
It must be something in the water.
In recent weeks the Barrhead Leader has featured a number of athletes who have risen to prominence on a larger stage.
One of the latest Barrhead athletes to shine on a larger stage is volleyball player Cameron Gelderman. This year Gelderman lead the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) in digs with 337 (the old mark was 247). He also holds the league’s all time record of 713.
Many people make the decision to leave their cars at home and walk or bike to work. There is even a West Kelowna, B.C. man who kayaks 15-minutes across the Okanagan Lake to his job, but one canoeist has taken it to a whole new level.
On Wednesday, May 13, Barrhead native Dylan Bajer left from Barrhead via the Paddle River to his job as a guide with Nahanni River Adventures, in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., with the help of three friends, Justine Wilmot, Dylan Bajer, Sarah Johnston and Liam Law.
Bothers Nathan and Caleb Zdrodowski started P.O.W. Paintballing at a very young age.
“I was in Grade 10, and he was in Grade 9,” Nathan said, adding they never expected it to go this far, but recently saw the course celebrate its tenth season.
“It’s amazing,” Nathan said.
The course has expanded over the years, and started as a small get together of friends.
“We are now at the point where we can handle groups of up to 60 people at the course,” Nathan said.
Ty Steinbring may not have been born with a golf club in his hand, but it was close.
By the time the Barrhead native was three years-old he was already hitting the links with his first set of golf clubs.
That is what Ty Steinbring and his mother Trisha told the Barrhead Leader in an interview at the Barrhead Golf Club on Tuesday, June 23, just before the he hit the driving range to practice for the upcoming Alberta Provincial Junior and Juvenile Golf Championships taking place in Lethbridge on June 29 to July 2.
