The Athabasca Golf and Country Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a tournament last Wednesday.
More than 180 golfers attended the event.
Although the day started out with a few drops of rain, the sun came out, and golfers had a beautiful day to commemorate 50 years.
“It went great,” organizer Trevor Martin said.
“We tried to gear everything around the 50th anniversary theme,” he explained. “We had one hole where you had to chip 50 yards and then putt between 50 potatoes to try and sink your ball.”
The event finished off with a steak supper at the clubhouse.
Kyle Craig shot a hole-in-one on hole 14.
“That is pretty rare,” Martin said. “It was pretty cool and special to see — it was the highlight of the day.”
The $2,500 hole-in-one prize was sponsored by Canadian Tire.
Martin said the staff helped make the event a success.
“I didn’t hear one negative complaint,” he said.
Golfers of all ages and skill levels took to the course to have a little fun.
With so many golfers, Martin said they had to be creative. They played Texas scramble and played 20 holes instead of 18.
At each hole, players and teams were asked to enter their names in a draw if they met the draw criteria for that hole. On hole number eight, any team that had a bogey or worse had to put the team name in the draw. On hole 10, for any ball in the bush, the player’s name was entered into the draw.
The draw prizes were awarded at the dinner.
