It’s almost time to start breaking out the golf gear.
All the snow is almost gone, and that means the Barrhead Golf Club will be welcoming bookings for tee times.
“We are usually opening from mid-April to mid-October, but this has been an untypical year with the weather we’ve had. We hopefully will be opening the course around the first week in May,” said course pro Danny Grant
The 18-hole championship course is highlighted by a challenging 6,650-yard layout coupled with pristine manicuring. It has been included in Golf Digest’s “Best Places To Play” for the past three years and is known as a must stop for all central Alberta golf enthusiasts.
“I would say hole 4 is probably the most challenging hole in the province. The course itself is rated at 129. An average course is typically rated at 113. The higher the number, the more challenging the course is,” said Grant.
BGC features well-manicured grass greens, a driving range, practice green, pro shop, lessons, restaurant and lounge, and camping.
“The conditions of the course make it stand out. The layout is also very interesting, and that’s why it ranks high on the list of great golf courses in the province,” said Grant.
The course caters to about a dozen large corporate tournaments each year, and more than 20 smaller tournaments are held at the BGC. Beginning July 1, BGC hosts about a dozen different tournaments covering ladies, men’s and juniors.
To play a round of golf during off-peak times, the rate is $29, while the peak rate will cost you $55. For a single adult membership, the cost is $850 a year. It’s best to book your tee time at least a week in advance, said Grant.
“A course like this in Ontario would cost well over $150 to play,” said Grant.
