Athabasca’s Flips Gymnastics Club is springing towards its annual fun meet this Saturday from 11 a.m. until around 5 p.m. in two buildings on the Agriplex grounds.
“It’s the one time a year that our gymnasts showcase what they’ve learned throughout the session,” said Flips president Nichole Collins.
Every gymnast participates: the youngest gymnasts give a demonstration as a group, and the older ones compete against one another in a fun atmosphere.
“They’ll get judged for their bar routine and being on the beam and those kinds of things,” said Collins.
Professional gymnasts, including a national-level competitor, will give demonstrations at noon and 3:30 p.m.
“This is a great way to see what gymnastics is all about at all levels,” said Collins of why the public should attend the free event, which will feature door prizes and a concession.
If anyone’s interest in the sport is piqued, Flips is offering a seven-week spring session beginning in April. Registration will be open in time for the fun meet.
Flips has also partnered with Whispering Hills Primary School to give all young students a taste of gymnastics: starting March 3, Flips coaches will teach the gymnastics curriculum for three weeks in gym classes. Flips will cover half the cost of bringing in the coaches.
“We wanted to do that to give back to the community,” said Collins.
