A group of Alberta’s best amateur golfers will arrive at the Athabasca Golf and Country Club on June 17 to compete in the Men’s Mid Amateur Championship.

“We’re proud to be hosting it,” said Trevor Martin, board member for the country club. “It will be 120 of Alberta’s best amateur golfers at our course.”

The tournament is a counting event for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) system, which ranks the top amateur golfers in the world on the basis of their average performance.

Registration for the tournament, put on by Alberta Golf, runs until June 10 and is open to amateur male golfers who are 40 years of age and over and have a handicap of 5.9 or less.

The championship runs until June 19.

“We’re really going to try and showcase our golf course,” Martin said.

Athabasca golfer Daryl Campbell, Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries president and chief operating officer Al Ward and country club superintendent Hugh Greene will be competing in the tournament, along with other golfers from across the province.

Spectators are welcome to watch the tournament. Tee-offs will start at 7 a.m. each day of the tournament.
