The Athabasca and District Minor Hockey Association (ADMHA) held its annual Awards Night at the Multiplex last Tuesday, with all of the 2011-12 teams present along with their friends and family.
Presiding over the awards was ADMHA president Darcy Tangedal, who routinely offered the podium to coaches so they could talk about their season and their players. All of the players were recognized in some way, and many were given special awards in recognition of their efforts.
The kids on all three of Athabasca’s pre-novice teams all received certificates of achievement.
In the Novice level and above, kids on each team received Esso medals of recognition (most improved, most sportsmanlike and most dedicated) while others were recognized with memorial awards bearing the name of past players and volunteers. From the Novice Firehawks, Bauer Adamkewicz received the Janet Garton Memorial Award for the most dedicated Novice player.
From the Novice Steelhawks, Nayte Ramey was recognized with the Dale Murphy Memorial Award for the “most all around talented, dedicated and sportsmanlike Novice player”.
In the Atom division, the Harry Shaw Memorial Award for the “Atom player who exemplifies sportsmanlike conduct, has outstanding ability and plays with enthusiastic enjoyment” went to Brady Bilsky and Joshua Burritt. The Danny Gerlach Memorial Award for the Peewee player “who exemplifies sportsmanlike conduct, has outstanding ability and plays with enthusiastic enjoyment” went to Treyton Tangedal and Adam Smith.
The Rhett DeLeeuw Memorial Award was once again presented in honour of the local boy who was going into his second year of Peewee hockey when he died in a quadding accident. The Memorial Award is given to a Peewee player who has never before been recognized with an award. This year’s winners were Cauy Bell and Noah Opmeer
The Ron Kerbes Memorial Award for the Bantam player “who epitomizes team play, respect for the game, is hardworking and demonstrates a willingness to improve” went to Joshua Payuk. The Athabasca Hockey Parents Association Bantam Award went to Michael Zacharuk.
The Richard Wiselka Memorial Award for the Grade 12 Midget player “who is dedicated to education, leadership and an enforcing role on the ice while demonstrating a good sense of community and always giving 110 per cent” went to Zach Fisher and Ty Tangedal.
The Larry Gorrell Memorial Award for the most dedicated and aggressive Midget player went to Robbie Mason and Tyler Young.
Finally, the Bernadette Lyle Memorial “Mothers Choice Award” for a player who “exemplifies most mothers wishes and shows dedication to their family and friends as well as to the game” went to Jacob Opmeer.
The fan of the year award went to Brian and Susan Adamkewicz. The volunteer of the year was Kelly Rich.
