A mountain of awards were handed out by Athabasca Minor Hockey to close out their season.
The annual awards night, held at the Multiplex on Apr. 17, not only recognized the achievements of players on each team at every level, but also honoured a number of other participants from the past season.
The night was also used to once again celebrate the three league championship teams that Athabasca produced this season - the Novice Spider Hawks, the PeeWee B Hawks and the Midget B Hawks.
Various memorial awards were presented during the evening. They included the Rhett Deleeuw Memorial award for PeeWee players to Julianna Hanzel and Josh Burritt; the Richard Wiselka Memorial award to Cam Hutchison for a Grade 12 midget player who showed dedicate and leadership; Ron Kerbes Memorial award to Jerrid Hanzel for a Bantam player who epitomizes team play, respect and improvement; the Bernadette Lyle Memorial award (also known as the Mothers Choice award) to Laurissa Tangedal as the player most exemplifies a mother's wishes and is dedicated to both the game and family; the $750 Referee Scholarship award to Cam Hutchison as the graduating official who qualified by meeting a number criteria; the Harry Shaw Memorial award to Brandon Phillips, Ashton Funk and Marcus Zaft for Atom players with good conduct, ability and enthusiasm; the Danny Gerlach Memorial award to JC Cardinal and Carsen Runcer for PeeWee players showing good conduct, ability and enthusiasm; the Larry Gorrell Memorial award to Zach Bendall and Josh Payuk for Midget players showing dedication and aggressive play; the Dale Murphy Memorial award to Christian Francis with the for all round talented Novice player; the Athabasca Hockey Parents award to Jager Bruce as the Bantam player with good conduct, ability and enthusiasm;, and, the Janet Garton Memorial award to Matthew Liddell and Jessie Li for most dedicated Novice player.
Aside from the memorial awards, the Pre-Novice teams handed each player a certificate of achievement as part of a Hockey Canada recognition program and the rest of the teams handed out their Esso Medals of Achievement consisting of the player awards for Most Sportamanlike (MS), Most Dedicated (MD) and Most Improved (MI) players.
Those winners were: Novice Winter Hawks - MS: Lily Adamkewicz, MD Lochlan Hefferan, MI Keira Burchby; Novice Ice Hawks - MS Marcus Sakowich, MS Kegan Miller, MI Austin Rich; Novice Spider Hawks - MS Devon Walega, MD TJ Sawchuk, MI Lucy Woodburn-Elliott; Atom A Hawks - MS Claire Francis, MD Bauer Adamkewicz, MI Joshua Mitchell; Atom B Storm Hawks - MS Jenna Kucioba, MD Tayeen Heck, MI Bryer Foster; Atom B Sea Hawks - MS Bailey Burritt, MD Erin Garbourie, MI Ashur Younathan; PeeWee B Hawks - MS Will Fox, MD Damon Walega, MI Shawn Strong; PeeWee C Hawks - MS Ambros Houle, MD Seth Baron, MI Caleb Corgdon; Bantam B1 Hawks - MS Jacob Sakowich, MD Lyndon Joyes, MI Tyson Strong; Bantam B2 Hawks - MS Nolan Haggerty, MD Evan Ladouceur, MI Joel Burchby; Midget B Hawks - MS Laurissa Tangedal, MD Tryell Parker, MI Jordan Epp and Ryan Plat; North Central Midget AA Bulls - MS Tor Tangedal, MD Tyson Tymo and Scott Danyluk, MI Iver Steffes.
Other awards were also handed out, including the coach of the year award to PeeWee B Hawks head coach Jordan Walega, fans of the year award to Lorraine and Ed Wiselka, the volunteer of the year award going to Wanda Parker and four rookie referees - Ryley Biro, Donovan Stapley, Tyler Stocking and Denny Tremblay - recognized for their work this season with new whistles.
