Ethan Sakowich, 15, of Athabasca has been chosen to play for the northwest division team in the Alberta Cup.
The northwest team is one of eight zone teams that will complete in the ATB Alberta Cup in Strathmore from April 24–27.
After the three-day tryout from March 28–30 in Spruce Grove, Sakowich was excited when he got the call telling him he made the team. Approximately 800 kids try out for a spot on one of the eight teams.
“It was great. I was definitely pretty nervous, but when I got the call, I was pretty excited,” he said.
Sakowich, a defenceman, played the 2013/2014 season in Fort Saskatchewan for the bantam AAA Rangers. In the 30 games he played, he tallied six goals and 12 assists.
“It was a great season,” Sakowich said. “I thought our team definitely improved from the start.”
The other zone teams competing in the Alberta Cup include: south, Calgary south, Calgary north, central, Edmonton south, Edmonton north, and northeast. The eight teams will compete in a four-day tournament, which is frequented by scouts looking for talent as they prepare for the Western Hockey League bantam draft.
Sakowich will be skating alongside players from Stony Plain, St. Albert, Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Calahoo and Clairmont, some of whom he has played with previously.
Sakowich is excited to get on the ice in the tournament.
“I’m just going to try and do whatever it takes to win and just play my game,” he said.
