Badminton players show off at regional event

The Aspen View School Division Badminton Regionals were hotly contested in Athabasca and Boyle last week.

Grade 9 students from around the region were in action at the ‘A’ event at Boyle School last Tuesday, while Grade 7/8 students competed at the ‘B’ event at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

In Boyle, the ‘A’ girls single championship went to Edwin Parr Composite’s Vania Ladoceur, with silver going to Boyle’s Madison Graham.

The boys singles gold went to Boyle’s Jordan Sawka, with EPC’s Sean Greene collecting silver.

In girls doubles, gold went to Boyle’s Sarah Archibald and Kayla Kensley, with silver going to their classmates Dacoda Marshall and Taylor Scammell.

In ‘A’ boys doubles, EPC’s Evan Kaminski and Max Elgert took home the gold, with Edwin Parr’s Jackson Roth and Derek Greene getting silver.

Finally, in mixed doubles, the gold was won by Grassland School’s Austin Kononchuk and Annalise Walker; Boyle’s Connor Nikipelo and Vicky Whitford earned silver.

Contested at the Multiplex, competition was just as fierce in the ‘B’ event.

Boys singles gold went to EPC’s Jonathan Millington while silver went to Chandlor Andreas.

Thorhild’s Chayla Lip won girls gold while EPC’s Moira MacMullin grabbed silver.

In boys doubles, EPC’s Shaun Funk and Nathan Minkus won gold with silver going to Grassland’s Tyson Tymo and Jaden Shulhan.

Girls doubles saw EPC teams in the final; gold went to Hailey Dunsire and Jocelyne Meier while silver went to Brianna Kennedy and Marina Pealey.

In mixed doubles, EPC’s Adam Calliou and Claire Wasel won gold, leaving silver for classmates Kyla Gyte and Treyton Tangedal.

The ‘C’ event was also held at the Multiplex.

In boys singles, Boyle’s Connor Scammell won gold with EPC’s Kent Kennedy taking silver.

Girls singles saw Boyle’s Jade Bencharsky win gold with EPC’s Gracelyn Lovelace taking silver.

In boys doubles, Landing Trail Intermediate School’s Nathaniel Borys and Sam Elgert won gold with their classmates DJ Auger and Jerrid Hanzel getting silver.

In girls doubles, Kelsey Pysyk and Shae-Lynn Pisarewski from Grassland won gold while Thorhild’s Hailey Jamieson and Kalika Kemp got silver.

Finally, in mixed doubles, gold went to Nick Roddick-Ament and Alyssa Erdely from LTIS with silver going to Mackenzie Bauer and Devin Ewasiw from Thorhild.
