The best young badminton players around were in action at Boyle School and the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last Thursday for the badminton regional competition.
The ‘A’ event was held in Boyle while the ‘B’ and ‘C’ events took place in Athabasca.
At the ‘A’ event, gold in boys singles went to Boyle’s Rylan Tkachuk with silver going to H.A. Kostash’s Jesse Sorokan.
The gold standard in girls singles was Shaelyn Beach from Edwin Parr Composite, while it was Meagan Wonsik from H.A. Kostash who won silver.
In boys doubles, Boyle School’s Dallan Bencharsky and James Langevin won gold with Mitchel Ewasiw and Josh Nicol from Thorhild Central nabbing silver.
In girls doubles, Grassland School’s Payton Tymo and Shyan Hyrynk won gold while Thorhild’s Sabrina Harper-Legere and Abigail Nendze won silver.
Gold in mixed doubles went to Thorhild’s Jade Rosenberger and Brandon Blok while silver went to Alex Antal and Tori Snyder.
The ‘B’ and ‘C’ events at the Multiplex were just as hotly contested.
In the ‘B’ division, single boys gold went to Boyle’s Jordan Gallinger with Grassland’s Mitch Evancusky getting silver. ‘B’ girls singles, meanwhile, saw EPC’s Vania Ladouceur win gold with Radway’s Breanna Wilchiw earning silver.
In boys doubles, EPC dominated with Max Elgert and Evan Kaminski winning gold and Derek Greene and Jackson Roth getting silver.
Girls doubles, on the other hand, was dominated by Boyle School as Madison Graham and Myrika Lapawchuk earned gold with Dacoda Marshal and Taylor Scammell grabbing silver.
In mixed doubles, it was the team of Connor Nikipelo and Victoria Whitford from Boyle that won gold while EPC’s Jessica Overacker and Mark Thompson won silver.
In the ‘C’ event, boys singles went to Andrew Lee from H.A. Kostash while silver went to Chandlor Andres from Landing Trail Intermediate School.
Girls singles gold went to Thorhild’s Chayla King with silver going to Boyle’s Kaitlyn Bencharsky.
In boys doubles, Shawn Funk and Jon Millington from LTIS won gold with their schoolmates Eric Bay and Jesse Weber getting silver.
Girls doubles was won by Radway’s Kierra West and Avery Kuzik, leaving silver for Denine Reid and Gracelyn Locelace from LTIS. Finally, in mixed doubles, Adam Smith and Bryanna Berg from LTIS had gold while another LTIS team of Tristan Osmond and Brittany Berg won silver.
