The softball season came to an end for Athabasca’s Bantam Girls Trappers with a tournament at Jewell Park.

Six teams competed at the tournament, all of them playing three games. The Trappers ultimately played in the event’s ‘B’ final where they lost a close game to Legal by a score of 12-11.

The girls lost their first game 15-11 to Redwater before trouncing Westlock 20-8 to earn their spot in the ‘B’ final.

As evidenced by the scores, the girls had no trouble scoring runs over the weekend.

“Everyone was on the sticks real good,” said head coach Trevor Martin.

The highlight of the weekend for the girls was the final game. Though they fell short, they played what the coach called one of their best games of the season.

“Both teams played really good defense. It came down to the last inning,” he said. “We finished on a high note and played really well.”

It was the second consecutive year that the girls brought their season to a close at their home ballpark.

“It’s a good way to end the year,” said Martin.

The girls finished in the middle of their league standings, but they played well enough for the coach to consider their season a success.

“We were competitive with most teams. Most games were really close,” he said. “We’ve seen a lot of improvements.”

Now that the book is closed on what Martin called “a really good, fun season”, the Trappers can look forward to next year. Three girls will be graduating, but the coach said the team will have a solid core to work with.

On behalf of his team and Athabasca Minor Ball, Martin offered thanks to Lloyd and Lyne Jewell, who offered the use of their park for no charge throughout the season and kept it manicured.

“It’s so well looked after.”
