The Barrhead Atom Hawks dominated a home tournament over the weekend, winning every game and taking the championship.
The boys played against Spruce Grove, High Prairie, and Edmonton, their skill evident on the scoreboard as they claimed a victory in each game.
Sunday afternoon, the Hawks took to the ice once again against the Atom SG855 Rebels from Spruce Grove in the atom A final Sunday afternoon.
The game began and the teams displayed skills that were evenly matched. With no goals from either the Hawks or the Rebels by the end of the first period, it was still anyones game.
The battle continued in the second, with no scoring action until after the 10-minute mark. With just over nine minutes left in the period, Barrhead player Noah Kastelic singlehandedly landed the first goal of the game.
With the Hawks up 1-0, Barrhead continued on the offense. Only three minutes later, the boys swooped in for another goal as Kaleb Timm slipped the puck into the net unassisted.
Though the Hawks led the game 2-0 going into the third and final period, the boys didn’t let up. Five minutes in, Colin Lovich scored another goal for Barrhead with an assist from Riley Harrison.
The boys kept the score at 3-0 for the remainder of the game, and Barrhead goalie Keaton Branden gave the Hawks a shutout win.
Hawks head coach Mike Visser said the boys had a great weekend, and he was proud of the team for their determination and enthusiasm throughout the tournament.
“The boys played hard, and I think they had a lot of fun,” said Visser. “They kept getting better as the weekend went on.”
The Hawks’ season overall has been going well, said the coach. Visser has had the boys working on a variety of skills, ranging from positioning and puck pressure, to defensive body positioning. And, so far so good.
“We’re getting stronger as we get into our regular season,” said Visser. “The kids are definitely getting more confident. It’s going well.”
